BusApps400 For 2.5.2012
Today, 2.5.2012
1. Create a mind map on paper with keywords/tags indicating your interests which your mind mapper will transform and post using mindmeister.de (30).
2. Review my page on Group Work, http://brucespear.info/methods/group-work-2/ and decide on what elements each of you will work on for the next week.
Work on the HTML assignment for next week, beginning with the creation of a simple html file using your Notepad or Textedit editor, save to your hard drive, and open up in your browser.
= 1. Demonstrate your masters of ALL of the HTML formatting features available on your WordPress.com blogs as discussed on http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/.
This will likely involve your reading more of the Head First HTML chapter and may also involve visiting the W3C School HTML site.
For 9.5.2012
1. Demonstrate your mastery of ALL of the HTML formatting features available on your WordPress.com blogs as discussed on http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/. Paste into your Portfolio, Save as .pdf, and post the .pdf to our Portfolio file by next Tuesday. Include proof of your having completed the Codecademy HTML Tutorial by submitting a screenshot of your final page! Write up a paragraph indicating your difficulties and “a-ha!” experiences!
2. Read the case study by Weill & Nagayama, 7-ELEVEN Japan, and write up 1-3 paragraphs indicating your “a-ha” experiences: the topics you might, if you had the chance, like to follow up.
3. An additional blog post on your emerging bus-apps-sys-career topic.

Troubleshooting
Some quick troubleshooting advice for students writing html in their text editors
My first notes on education at Harvard
Brief notes, to be extended, on Prof. Eric Mazur’s work at Harvard: class time reserved for discussion.
The Apple is Rotten
I’m an old Apple Fan Boy, but these reports make me feel ashamed of myself. Apple is in damage control mode. Foxconn announced they would increase wages by 24% or more, but that they are about to implement 1 million robots as well. Be sure to check out the video. This is a tough one.
Clarify, An Alternative to Powerpoint
I’m trying to figure out how best to use class time and how differently I can help students reflect on their work. I’ve gotten into the habit of offering brief reviews of many posts, and the best way to do that is to select and prepare carefully. I’m working a lot with screenshots, and this application, as I explain in this post, invites the writing up and publishing of commentary in an effective way.
Preparing for lots of different jobs
The labor markets of today are far different than those I grew up with. It’s dog eat dog out there, I don’t envy my students one bit. This post offers a brief account of an article and a colleague’s helpful consulting business.
Ronnie Wood on Eric Clapton
This is a fine short video of one rocker talking about another. Wood describes how insanely curious is Eric Clapton, one of my favorite musicians, and it confirms what I always thought: he thrives on the work of others. Lower down on this page is a clip of Clapton talking about music. For me, inspiring stuff!
Irina got me thinking about food, and I ended up at @Wharton
This is a short version of the discussions of student work that I mostly do over on my Conversations site, and I wanted to see how it works and looks over here. It looks good. It is right to the point, and from what I’ve seen it helped my students by offering them support and advice. As often, it was also great fun for me to dig in to what they are doing.
